Not long after hiking its Premium plans in India, YouTube seems to be testing a less expensive version for users in select regions. Known as the ‘Premium Lite’ plan, the addition was proposed sometime last year but was axed after the video streaming company conducted a few tests. However, it might be all set to make a comeback to select regions. Here’s everything you need to know about the plan.
YouTube announces a Premium Lite variant: What's there to know?
The Premium Lite version, or the scaled-down version of YouTube Premium, is aimed at users looking to reduce ads and have access to the Premium features without spending a fortune. While the plan is priced at half of YouTube’s Premium version, it will not include certain tools and services. These include YouTube Music, offline downloads or background playback.

Previously, YouTube tested a Premium Lite plan as an ad-free experience for its smartphone and web users. However, this time around, the company has only ‘reduced’ ads and will have limited interruptions while browsing. YouTube has also confirmed to publications such as The Verge and Android Authority how users may find ads in cases of ‘music content and Shorts’. Apart from that, it additionally mentions how users may see ‘non-interruptive ads’ while scrolling or browsing through YouTube.
When will the YouTube Premium Lite plan be available in India?
As of now, Google has confirmed that it is testing the Premium Lite plan in Austria, Germany and Thailand. Earlier, the plan was tested across various other countries, such as Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. That said, it remains to be seen if or when it plans to expand the plan to more regions in Asia.
While the future of this plan may seem uncertain, Google seems to be keen on considering a more affordable, ad-reduced option for many of its services. Whether or not it comes to India will largely depend upon its learnings and feedback from various other countries.
