Song stuck in your head? YouTube Music will soon be able to help you find it

YouTube Music’s ‘hum to search’ is the hack for that song stuck in your head

You’re minding your business and going about your day, only to find yourself humming a tune that you don’t recognise. Sounds familiar? You’re certainly not the only one. Of course, having a good song stuck in your head without knowing the name seems nothing less than dread-inducing sometimes.

While Google Assistant has a built-in feature to help you find it, YouTube Music, too, will soon lend you a helping hand. Known as the ‘hum to search’ feature, the addition was available to users with the YouTube app since October 2023. However, the platform has only recently introduced it to the YouTube Music smartphone app as well. Here’s everything you need to know about the feature:

YouTube Music 'hum to search': How will the feature work?

According to a 9to5Google report, the feature will rest on the YouTube Music app, like the YouTube app. The icon design will remain the same for both these apps, but it will typically be located next to the voice search option for quicker access.

Users will only have to tap the icon and hum into the microphone. After humming, the app will detect the song based on its AI technology and will match the best possible results with the tone. Once done, you will be presented with song options that you can play or save based on your choice.

Who can use the 'hum to search' feature on YouTube Music?

The ‘hum to search’ feature was observed only on iOS devices, but YouTube seems to be gradually rolling it out to all users. While it would be helpful if YouTube Music decides to save all your search results into a playlist, we’re sure the feature will go through multiple stages of development in the future.
