Searching for a song may will soon be more fun

YouTube Music will soon have you humming into your phone to search for music

In a few weeks from now, if you spot someone in public transport trying to sing into their phones without being embarrassed, they could be doing something as simple as finding a song. That’s because YouTube Music is working on a new feature that may make finding songs better easier for some, but will definitely make it more fun for everyone.

The YouTube Music app for Android phones is working on a new feature that will let users hum, sing or whistle the rhythm of a song they are looking for. This is great for tracks where you don’t know the name, but may know some of the lyrics of the song you’re looking for.

The feature’s workings are actually not very different from how services like Shazam work. However, instead of relying on playback that’s loud and clear enough, you can now take matters into your own hands, and hopefully bring out your inner Freddie Mercury.

Who will get the new YouTube Music feature?

The new feature will be a part of the YouTube Music app for Android, and will likely be rolled out in a phased manner. Those who do get access to the feature should see a new ‘waveform’ icon next to the microphone icon on the top of the app (the one you use to dictate regular searches).

Those who do not have access to the feature will not see this new button, but can watch out for any new YouTube Music update on the way. Coming to how well the feature works, well that depends on a number of factors, from how much noise there is around you, to how good your humming/singing actually is.

As per a report by The Verge, the feature has also been a rare spotting on YouTube Music app for iOS. However, the rollout doesn’t seem very wide yet, so those with iPhones may have to wait longer before they get the feature.
