If you’re a YouTube Music subscriber, you might soon be able to generate a custom radio station with the help of Google’s new AI-powered feature. The feature, which is currently being tested, will allow users to create a playlist based on a prompt. Here’s everything we know so far about the development.
YouTube AI-powered radio: What is it and how will it work?
The feature was discovered by a Reddit user, who shared screenshots of its addition on the YouTube Music smartphone app. According to the user, the feature will prompt users to ‘Ask for music any way you like’ as soon as they open their smartphone app. It will pop up like a card on their homepage feed and will allow them to further describe what they wish to hear.

Once you do, the pop-up will expand into a card with suggested tracks as per your prompt. For instance, if you’re looking for ‘Bollywood road trip songs’, Gemini AI will generate a playlist based on your prompt keywords. However, since the feature is currently undergoing development, the card shows up with an ‘Experiment’ badge to indicate to the user that the feature is being tested.
Additionally, YouTube Music also allows you to enter a voice prompt; however, it also goes on to warn how: “AI-generated responses are experimental. Quality and accuracy may vary.” It further cautions users from entering confidential or personal information regarding them or others around them.
Users will also find two-line prompt suggestions under their generated content, such as ‘catchy pop choruses’ or ‘epic soundtracks’. There is also an option that says ‘Surprise Me!’ for users who are feeling adventurous. After your playlist is generated, YouTube Music will then create a radio station and use the existing playlist card to show you the results. Your suggested prompt will be used as the ‘station name’ and will have a ‘created for you’ label and a description.
YouTube AI-powered radio: When will the feature be available for everyone?
So far, only one instance of the AI radio has been observed and it is not clear if the feature will extend to other devices. It is also unknown if YouTube plans to make this a Premium-only feature. However, YouTube has also incorporated other AI-based features for videos and creators. Only recently, the streaming company mentioned how it will allow creators to mute copyrighted audio without it impacting other audio in the clip.
Apart from this, it also mentioned how users will soon be able to skip to the most viewed part of the video using AI technology. The brand seems to b be harnessing AI technology for better user experience; however, whether or if it finally rolls out for a larger audience is something we will have to wait and see.
