YouTube is hopping on the generative AI bandwagon

You may soon be able to have conversations with YouTube about the videos you’re watching

Generative artificial intelligence (AI), is no longer limited to tools such as ChatGPT, Bard, and Bing Chat. The space has lately seen multiple new entrants on the scene, including the likes of Apple and Samsung, with its recently announced Gauss conversational AI chatbot. Well, another such name, albeit lesser known when it comes to AI, is YouTube, which has just announced that it will begin experimenting with generative AI features for videos. Intrigued? Read on.

What YouTube’s new generative AI tools are and what they can do for you

YouTube is working on not one, but two new AI-based features for videos. Here’s what they are, and why you may want to give them a whirl.

1. Conversational AI tool

YouTube is developing and testing a cool conversational AI chatbot, in a bid to boost engagement with its audiences. What it does, is allow users to have conversations around a video they’re watching in real time. The tool is meant to help users engage with the content they’re consuming in a deeper, more comprehensive manner.

One can ask the chatbot questions regarding the video they’re watching, recommend related content, and more. That’s not all though. Say a user is watching an educational/informative video. To gauge their understanding of the same, the tool can also generate quizzes for a user to take in real-time.

How it will do this, is by drawing on information derived from large language models. Which ones, was not specified for now. The AI chatbot, moreover, will only be available to YouTube Premium subscribers on Android devices in the US initially. It is not clear whether this tool can be used for every video by default. If and when this feature will be rolled out for iPhones and desktop devices, also remains unknown as of now.

2. Comment summariser

Another cool feature YouTube is working on is one that summarises comments on YouTube videos for you. Using AI, it groups and summarises discussions in the comment section around different themes, to allow for a viewer to understand what other people are saying about a given video. This is a feature aimed more towards creators, looking to understand how their content is being received by their audiences, and if it is being received by the right audiences.

What’s also cool is that the tool summarises only those comments which meet YouTube’s community guidelines, and are published. Any comments that contain offensive or blocked words are hidden. Moreover, owners of a particular channel can also delete any comments that appear under a specific theme or topic on their videos, should they choose to do so.

The tool for now, will only be available for a few people to test, who have signed up for the same on YouTube’s website.

Both new features are expected to be rolled out to YouTube Premium subscribers in the coming weeks, and can be accessed through YouTube’s platform for experimental features – youtube.com/new, on an optional basis.
