Your PlayStation controller may soon light up to provide you with gameplay hints

Artificial intelligence and machine learning, it turns out, can be used for far more than mere text or image generation, drawing up spreadsheets, or even to create music. A new patent by Sony suggests that it is developing a controller which will help players with gameplay hints, anytime they find themselves stuck at a certain stage in a game. Intrigued? Read on.

DualSense controllers may soon give you gameplay hints

Sony has just patented a DualSense controller, which can provide gameplay hints to players by lighting up its buttons, the shoulder triggers as well as analog sticks. How it does this, is using predictive assistance capabilities based on a machine learning model.

The model constantly monitors a player’s performance and based on its observations, determines when they may need help. Should it at any point believe a player is stuck, or may even be about to get stuck, it will automatically light up buttons on the controller to suggest the next course of action to them.

That’s not all. The patent also suggests that the touchpad on the controller will be replaced with a display, on which the hints will be spelled out as well. This isn’t the first time Sony has hinted at the touchpad being replaced by a display. Another similar patent had earlier emerged in September.

Now, while the patent does certainly suggest that Sony is working on such a controller, whether it will see the light of day, only time will tell. The move, however, will make PlayStation gaming much more accessible, especially for those who may be differently abled, or even just moving from PC to console gaming for the first time.

That’s not all. In a bid to take on its rivals Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony has also recently filed for another patent, which suggests that it may be researching ways to allow players to replay games from specific points, while streaming.
