ChatGPT is finally allowing free users to generate images

You can now generate images for free on ChatGPT, but with limitations

If you were on the internet in the last couple of weeks, you would have come across the viral Studio Ghibli trend, fueled by the new image generator that was added to ChatGPT. Following the surge of image generation requests, OpenAI temporarily restricted the feature to paid users only, including the ones who had ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Team subscriptions active.

Now, after the dust has settled in, with the number of users flocking to ChatGPT to generate artistically inspired renditions of their images, OpenAI has made the image generator free for all users. Including the ones on a free plan.

Free users can now generate images on ChatGPT

This news was announced by OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman on his X account where he wrote – “chatgpt image gen now rolled out to all free users!”. This announcement was also echoed on OpenAI’s official blog. The number of images that can be generate remains unclear, but many might remember Altman stating earlier that free users should be able to generate three images in a day.

This means that all the free users of ChatGPT, will be able to create images using the new image generator added to Model 4o, before being prompted to upgrade to a paid subscription.

After the first surge in users, Sam Altman, had famously put up a post on X, saying that the GPUs at OpenAI were “melting”. Following this, the restriction was imposed, and the netizens flocked to alternate platforms like Grok to get their images rendered in the signature style of Studio Ghibli.

However, with this new change to the daily limit, we will see more and more folks using ChatGPT to generate their images, possibly even shattering the platforms growth numbers. We would love to know your thoughts on this move. Have you already boarded the image generation train? Let us know in the comments below. And, for more such updates, stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma.
