Xiaomi’s newest TV is a 100-inch-wide wall of bright colours

But here's why you shouldn't get excited about it

Xiaomi’s newest TV is a 100-inch-wide wall of bright colours

Smart TVs have been growing bigger and bigger, bringing the living room-TV experience closer to that of a personal movie theatre. However, building larger screens continues to be a challenge for many brands. Chinese tech giant Xiaomi, however, is one of the few brands pioneering the personal large-screen TV experience.

The brand’s latest smart TV is the perfect example of the same, since it is nothing short of a massive 100-inch wall of colours. Launched in China, the new 100-inch Xiaomi TV S Pro 100 is Xiaomi’s largest TV yet, and also comes with a brightness of 1,000 nits, making it one of the brand’s brightest screens too. The TV can be installed in one of three ways – as a wall mount, sitting on its dedicated holder, or mounted on a mobile centre console.

The TV S Pro is also more than just a large screen. There is precise backlight control divided into 384 zones, allowing the TV to offer a dynamic contrast of 1 million to 1. An ambient brightness sensor also lets the TV adjust its brightness levels as per the natural or artificial light in its surroundings, similar to most smartphones today. It also packs a high refresh rate of 144Hz, making it great for gaming with a console or a gaming PC.

Other features include 94% DCI-P3 colour gamut coverage and support for over a billion colours. AMD FreeSync support, and two HDMI 2.1 ports are also part of the TV. The Xiaomi TV S Pro 100 also comes with 30W speakers, split across eight units on its body. Under the hood is 4GB of RAM, and 64GB storage.

But should you care about the 100-inch Xiaomi TV?

The Xiaomi TV S Pro 100 is not the world’s first 100-inch television, and it won’t be the last. But does someone actually need a TV of that size? There are a lot of factors that one needs to consider when buying a TV, and the screen size and viewing distance are important to consider. Few of us will have that kind of space at home to host a 100-inch TV.

Secondly, this new TV has been launched in China, with no guarantee on whether it will reach our shores. The Xiaomi TV S Pro 100 has launched in China at CNY 17,999 (approximately Rs 2,08,100), which is much more affordable than other 100-inch TVs like the Sony Professional 4K Ultra HD TV, which costs Rs 27 lakhs.
