Xiaomi smartphones to kick off New Year with a taste of HyperOS

Xiaomi has announced that its smartphones in India will soon get the new software interface skin, called HyperOS. Replacing the brand’s iconic MIUI skin, HyperOS will power both Xiaomi and Redmi smartphones moving forward. Some existing devices will also be eligible for the update. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is HyperOS?

HyperOS is Xiaomi’s new software skin, and note that despite its name, it is not a standalone operating system (OS). Rather, it is a software layer that sits above Google’s Android OS, which will continue to power Xiaomi phones.

HyperOS-based smartphones are set to get new features, and possibly a new look-and-feel that will set the brand’s smartphones apart. Based on Xiaomi’s claims, HyperOS is more than a rebranded version of MIUI. Some new expected features include AI-assistance including text generation, text extraction from images and image search.

HyperOS will also bring in a plethora of lock-screen customization options, the ability to uninstall bloatware (pre-installed apps you no longer need), and a new control center, among other new features.

When will your phone get HyperOS?

The HyperOS update will be rolled out first to the Xiaomi 13 Pro and the Xiaomi Pad 6, the brand’s current flagship smartphone and tablet, respectively. Xiaomi has confirmed that rollout for these devices will commence in January 2024.

HyperOS will also be available to more devices later this year. These include the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, Xiaomi 13, Xiaomi 13T, and Xiaomi 13T Pro, as well as the Redmi Note 12 and the Redmi Note 12S. The availability of the update for other devices is not yet confirmed.

Xiaomi and Redmi users with supported devices should get a notification when an update for their phone is available. Following this, users can simply follow on-screen instructions to update their smartphones.
