The AI scene just got a whole lot more interesting

xAI: Here’s what we know about Elon Musk’s latest venture

Elon Musk, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of electric car maker Tesla Inc. and aerospace company SpaceX, and more recently, the owner of Twitter, on Wednesday, unveiled his latest venture, an artificial intelligence (AI) company named xAI. Here’s what we know so far.

What is xAI?

The AI company, which had been hinted at for months, is the latest entrant on a fast heating up scene with multiple new entrants in the space in the past couple of months. Alongside Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which has been accessible to the public for a while now, is also Google’s Bard. Both, ChatGPT and Bard can converse with users via text, and deliver responses based on their users’ inputs as well as information available on the internet.

xAI, in the tech world, is otherwise used as an abbreviation for Explainable AI, or even Interpretable AI, which helps us understand the reasons behind the decisions regarding responses made by AI models. However, questions still surround the newly-formed company, which has not divulged any details regarding its meaning or its platform as of yet. For the same, it has organised a Twitter Spaces event scheduled for Friday, July 14,  to answer questions about the platform and its long-term vision.

Why should you pay attention to xAI?

Musk, who in the past has been vocal about his reservations regarding AI technology, and, along with a few other prominent players in the AI space, also called for a six-month pause on training AI systems more powerful than GPT-4, laid out his plans with the objective of building a “safer” AI in a Twitter Spaces event on Wednesday, to announce xAI.

Furthermore, the founding team at xAI includes former Google as well as Microsoft employees. Also, a lesser-known fact is that Musk himself is a co-founder of OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT, but stepped down from its board in 2018.
