Wynk Music is shutting down, Airtel to favour Apple Music instead

Until last night, the two big cellular service providers in India both had their own, full-fledged music streaming platforms in India. While Jio had JioSaavn, Airtel had Wynk Music. Apart from offering its own library of local and internation hits, the two platforms also served as partner apps for their respective cellular services, letting users set caller tunes, for instance.

Now, Airtel’s own streaming platform Wynk is shutting down. Here’s everything we know about the move so far.

Airtel shutting down Wynk: What we know.

As per a report by Moneycontrol, Airtel has confirmed that the company will “sunset Wynk Music and all Wynk music employees will be absorbed within the Airtel ecosystem.”

The report also mentions a tie-up with Apple, which should bring exclusive Apple TV+ and Apple Music offers for Airtel subscribers with smartphones.

Launched in 2014, Wynk was live for 10 years and while it offered the caller-tune setting functionality for Airtel subscribers, competition in the streaming department may have been too tough for the platform. This was because Wynk was up against big names like Spotify, YouTube Music, as well as Apple Music itself.

What this means for Wynk users

While the Wynk app remains live for both iPhones and Android phones for now, that may not be the case for much longer. The iOS version of the app in particular, was updated merely 5 days ago. It seems that will be the last update of the app.

Once the app goes down, users will likely receive official communication from Airtel. However, how Airtel users will set or switch their caller tunes remains to be seen.

Of course, if you were really invested in Wynk, and had custom playlists made, you must now go through the tedious process of manually taking your playlists to another platform – like Spotify. We assume Apple Music would be the more likely destination for many though, given Airtel’s clear intention to partner with the platform in the future.
