These days, customisation is of paramount importance when it comes instant messaging apps on smartphones. Be it by the use of customised stickers and memojis, or entire themes for that chat window, everyone likes to make their favourite chats ‘look’ the way they want.
This is why it was surprising that the only themes you could get on world’s most popular instant messaging app were light and dark mode. Thankfully, that is set to change really soon.
WhatsApp Chat themes: What we know so far
As per new reports by WABetaInfo, the latest iOS beta version of WhatsApp reveals that the app will feature a number of colourful themes to choose from, which apparently will work across all chats. Among these, users will be able to set a ‘default theme’ which will likely be the theme for new chats.

This also points to the fact that you will eventually be able to set custom chat themes for various chats. This will allow you to do things like, keeping one colour for all family members and relatives, another for colleagues and a third for friends.
The beta version is currently on iPhones only, but we may see a new WhatsApp beta version bring themes to Android phones as well very soon. Once up for stable versions of WhatsApp, the feature will allow everyone to set themes in their chat windows, bringing the app on par with rivals like Telegram, which have had the feature for years.
Note that if you are using the stable version of WhatsApp, like a lot of people do, you may have to wait for a few weeks or months for the feature to go live. Until then, what you can do is change the wallpaper for all your WhatsApp chats.
