WhatsApp rolls out new typing indicator style: Here’s what’s special

WhatsApp is rolling out a new animated typing indicator on phones. The new animated typing indicator is basically a three-dot indicator that bounces when someone is typing. Be it in a group or in a personal chat, the three-dot indicator at the bottom left of your screen will indicate that someone’s initiating a message.

What's special with WhatsApp's new typing indicator?

WhatsApp’s revamped typing indicator is aimed at enhancing real-time engagement among users. It’s drastically different from the old static typing indicator that used to show up at the top, below the username. In groups, the old typing indicator used to display the name of the person who’s typing, followed by the ‘typing…’ tag.

Now, with the new typing indicator, the three horizontal dots bounce and show the profile picture of a user at the bottom left when typing in a group. The new style of the typing indicator isn’t totally new, however, and we have already seen it before.

Apple’s iMessage offers a similar animated typing indicator to indicate that someone is initiating a message. While it’s an interesting UX feature that makes messaging more engaging, some may find it annoying. Unfortunately, you cannot disable or hide the typing indicator if you actually hate it.

As for its availability, WhatsApp confirmed that the feature is already rolling out to both Android phones and iPhones. So, you should see the feature within the app. But if you don’t, then update the app, and wait for it to show up.
