WhatsApp may introduce status notification feature for Android users

WhatsApp has consistently delivered updates to improve user experience. And lately, the Meta-owned platform has been in the news for testing development harnessing AI technology. Reports by WABetainfo suggest how the company could be using this to transform the status-viewing experience for users. Wondering how this will work? Here’s everything we know so far about the update.

WhatsApp status notification feature: What is it, and how will it work?

Not too long ago, WhatsApp rolled out a statement letting users know of an update that will allow them to mention their contacts in a status update. The new status notification feature, however, will alert a user when they have been tagged into a status update by their friend or contact.

On being mentioned, a user will typically receive a message which states the following: ‘You have an unseen update by your contact’. It is still unknown if the smartphone app prompts a user who has missed checking an update or has been recently tagged. So far, there has been no additional clarity as to how the user will remain informed.

Another possibility could involve notifications only from a user’s ‘favourite’ contact or someone they interact with the most. This means WhatsApp could only alert a user about someone they chat with more often, and enhance the ‘relevance’ or ‘timeliness’ of these updates.

When will the feature be available for everyone?

For now, the WhatsApp status notification feature is only available to the beta version of the app for Android 2.24.6.19. The report also mentions how it is slated to be introduced in an upcoming WhatsApp update for Android smartphone users. While there’s no information as to when this will be available for iPhone users, the instant messaging platform is likely to roll it out shortly following the Android update.
