While AirDrop continues to be the preferred default mode of sharing files between iPhones, and similar implementations on Android like Quick Share also get the job done, file sharing between iPhones and Android phones has always been a pain.
There’s no first-party tool that facilitates sharing files between the two platforms, and third-party solutions operate in very complex ways, or use the internet, which is a problem when you’re out of Wi-Fi coverage. However, it seems Meta’s WhatsApp is set to change that very soon.

As per a new report, WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will let you share files, small and large, with other WhatsApp users nearby – similar to how AirDrop works. The key point here is that the new feature may be on its way to both Android and iOS devices.
The feature was spotted as a Nearby Share alternative back in April on WhatsApp beta for Android builds. Now, traces of code suggesting the feature may be making its way to WhatsApp beta for iOS (in version version 24.15.10.70, to be precise) changes the game entirely.
Why WhatsApp’s file sharing service could be a boon
In regions like India, where WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging apps, such a feature could finally mean Android and iOS users will be able to send each other large files with encryption, without needing an active internet connection. From colleges to workplaces, this would make quick file sharing much easier than it has ever been.
However, there has been no confirmation so far on whether the feature will actually make it to iOS, and whether it will allow the cross-platform sharing Android and iOS users have been waiting for. With the whole file sharing business in beta right now, we still have months before we see the feature in action, and even longer before it’s live on everyone’s smartphones.
