WhatsApp launches Chat Filters to help navigate conversations better

WhatsApp has grown into a go-to communication tool for just about everyone today. In fact, the instant messaging platform has evolved enough to allow its users to share screens, create topical channels, and has also introduced secret codes for an added layer of privacy. However, ease of communication has always been a priority for the Meta-owned platform.

Today, our WhatsApp chats not only comprise our loved ones but also promotions and various offers as well. So, to ensure that users never lose sight of important conversations, WhatsApp has introduced ‘Chat Filters’.

WhatsApp Chat Filters: What's there to know?

Late last year, WhatsApp announced the development of chat filters for its smartphone app. The feature, which was then available for beta users, is now being rolled out to a larger audience. The aim behind introducing this was to streamline hundreds of chats and only bring out the ones that are crucial for your day-to-day communication.

To begin with, WhatsApp has introduced three filters – unread, read and groups. Meta, in a blog post, mentions how ‘All’ will typically feature every message exchange a user has had.

It also adds how ‘Unread’ messages are ideal for when you want to look for a particular chat that hasn’t been opened yet. Similarly, ‘Groups’ will make it simpler for a user only wanting to navigate among WhatsApp groups.

How to use WhatsApp chat filters

Once your smartphone app has been updated to the latest version, you will find the ‘Filter’ option on top of your chats. On tapping this, you will have the above-mentioned options in a list format, and you can tap on the one that you wish to work with.

However, it is critical to know that a filter name cannot be changed, and once applied, your chats will remain filtered until you toggle it off. Apart from this, chats will also not be able recategorised or reorganised within these filters.

Meta states how this addition to WhatsApp chats will allow users to stay more organised and navigate through messages more efficiently. The company also mentions its plans to segregate conversations better in the future.
