WhatsApp is testing a new feature that will let you search usernames

Those who use WhatsApp on a regular basis already know how challenging it is to get in touch if you don’t have the relevant contact details. However, this could change as the meta-owned platform is testing a feature that allows users to search for their friends via usernames. While it does seem handy, it is only natural to find yourself concerned about your privacy. But what if we tell you that your privacy and contact details may not be compromised after all? Here’s what you need to know about the feature.

Search by username on WhatsApp: What's there to know?

It is always a challenge to tell if our contacts are on WhatsApp. In fact, it also often requires an additional step of asking them if they have an account on their number. However, the instant messaging app plans to eliminate this step with a feature that could allow users to perform a simple search and find their friends. And if you’re worried about your contact’s privacy, WhatsApp also has a solution in the pipeline.

A report shared by WABetaInfo mentions how the search bar will now double up as a tool to identify accounts using WhatsApp, without disclosing a user’s contact information. Additionally, the report highlights how users can have control over this feature and change their username as per their will.

If required, you can also modify your current username, which will be displayed to contacts and the ones who search for you. This was introduced keeping in mind a user’s privacy and their need to mask their contact details while showing up within search results.

When will this feature be available to users?

As of today, the feature is still being tested out by WhatsApp, and it is difficult to tell when it will be available to users across platforms. For now, the feature seems to be tested for Android smartphone users and will gradually be made available across devices. WhatsApp seems to have several other features in the pipeline, with it introducing a secret code for chats and IP masking features for calls.
