WhatsApp gets a ‘darker’ dark mode and navigation overhaul with new design update

WhatsApp users have made the most of the platform’s countless updates that improve both the experience and user interface over time. From a new sidebar to pinning more than one message on your chat, the Meta-owned platform seems to be introducing both subtle and glaring changes to its UI every couple of months. In a more recent development, the instant messaging app has mentioned how it plans to integrate a layout change for both iOS and Android smartphone users. Here’s what you need to know.

WhatsApp design update: What's new this time?

WhatsApp has been reportedly testing over 35 colour palettes for a while now. However, a blog post reveals how the new, consistent green was chosen for the interface. If that’s not all, the Android app is also getting a ‘darker’ dark mode, which comes with higher contrast and deeper tones to help reduce eye strain in low-light conditions.

In addition to this, WhatsApp icons will also undergo an overhaul that will give them a rounded, outlined look to stay in tandem with the new look. The Meta-owned company also goes on to state how it will be introducing new illustrations and animation that will support the brand-new design. A part of this includes a change to the original doodle backdrop on the app.

This time around, users will also get a bottom navigation bar on WhatsApp which was rolled out to many in March 2024. iOS users will also get a redesigned attachment layout, with an expandable tray, instead of a regular full-screen menu. The design update will also include the recently introduced chat filter option, along with a separate tab for unread group messages.

When will the new features be available for everyone?

WhatsApp mentions how the new features will be gradually rolled out to everyone in the upcoming few weeks. While there seems to be no specific date for it to officially reach users, don’t forget to check the app store so that you don’t miss out on the latest version of the update.
