WhatsApp lately has extended many features to its smartphone as well as web apps. While some of these developments have helped the instant messaging platform evolve into a video conferencing platform, others like chat themes have contributed to improving user experience.
Now, WhatsApp is reportedly testing out a new feature that will soon help users organise and plan group events better. According to WABetaInfo, the company is in the process of selectively rolling out an Events feature for group chats in an attempt to be more ‘community focused’.
What is WhatsApp Events feature for group chats?
The Events feature was initially introduced as an addition to WhatsApp Communities; however, the report mentions how it is now moving to the main chat app as well. It was first spotted in the beta version 2.24.14.9, and it allows group chat members to create and modify an event for their group.
A group member looking to create one will be able to add in a description, name and date. Apart from these, they will also be able to put additional details, including voice or video call updates, as well as a location if required.
Once created, the rest of the participants will be able to RSVP and the creator will also be able to modify the details in case of a requirement.

The report goes on to state that much like any other communication on WhatsApp, the event and its details will also be end-to-end encrypted. The event will also be private to the participants and no one apart from the group members will be able to access this data.
Lastly, it also seems like the Event feature is only a step into creating something bigger, as WhatsApp plans to add other enhancements to it. These include the ability to set a reminder for the said event and also set a unique cover photo for it.
When will the Events feature be available for everyone?
For now, WhatsApp hasn’t mentioned a definitive timeline for the Event feature. Currently, it is available for a small subset of WhatsApp beta users, and those users interested can sign up to it for early access.
However, it is crucial to keep in mind that a beta version comes with its own set of glitches, and it is best to wait for a stable update to enjoy the features to their full potential.
Meanwhile, Meta also rolled out its Meta AI chatbot for its WhatsApp users and is gradually making it available across other services, such as Instagram, Facebook and Messenger.
