WhatsApp Context Card feature will soon make it easier to exit scam groups

WhatsApp took over messaging as the primary mode of communication, and we, as smartphone users, never looked back. Whether it is banking, education or a long-pending Goa plan, there’s a WhatsApp group for just about everything. In fact, the Meta-owned company also recently introduced an Events feature to help organise a larger group better.

That said, there are plenty of times our contact details fall into the wrong hands, who add us to groups that don’t concern us or are potentially harmful. Despite WhatsApp giving users the option to be ‘invited’, at certain times, it does become difficult to tell the genuine groups apart. However, Context Card is a new feature announced by the instant messaging company, which will notify a user if they are added to a spam group. Here’s how it works:

WhatsApp Context Card feature: What is it and how does it work?

Ever opened your WhatsApp smartphone app after a long day, only to find out you’ve been added to a crypto spam group with hundreds of other unknown people? Apart from the fact that it promotes spam and chaos in your inbox, it also ends up giving out your contact details to other members of the group.

While there is always the option of navigating to Settings > Groups and opting for your contacts to invite you to a group chat, WhatsApp has brought in an additional layer of security for users who require more context. The company also mentions how this move is to prevent someone you just met or unsaved contacts from adding you to an unknown group.

The ‘context card’ will typically pop up when users are added to a group. It will further mention everything, including the contact details of the admin who added you to the date when the group was created. Earlier, users would have to tap on group info to scroll and look up the admin(s) or figure out when it was created. With this addition, users can easily choose to stay or leave the group based on what they read.

WhatsApp Context Card feature: When will it be available for everyone?

WhatsApp mentions how it has already begun rolling the feature out, and it should be available to everyone in the upcoming few weeks. If that’s not all, the brand also seems to be working on an extra feature which will notify a user when an unknown person messages them. With WhatsApp turning into a mainstream meeting app, the platform seems to be employing more focus on security and privacy. However, when these features reach us is something to wait and watch.
