Themes have always been available on WhatsApp but it was quite limited. It was mainly used for changing the background wallpaper of chats. However, a new interface provides the ability to set a chat-specific theme. This allows users to customise them as per need.
Here’s everything you need to know about what’s new with the feature, where you can use it, and when you will get it.
WhatsApp chat themes: What's new?
The new update will showcase 20 chat colours and up to 22 textured chat themes. All of these themes will have preset chat colours for chat bubbles which may be different for the sender or receiver. It will add a new level of personalisation to their conversations and will be chat-specific.

Users will find a new ‘Chat Theme’ settings page where they can change the theme for individual chats. It will include settings to customise the chat colour and the background wallpaper. Users will also be able set a default theme for all conversations to maintain a consistent look across the app or select different themes for specific chats.
Additionally, it will allow users to apply a complementary chat colour each time a new colour is selected. For users who wish to explore more, they can manually adjust the chat colour for each conversation. Notably, these changes will remain private and will be visible to the user who made them.
WhatsApp chat themes: Availability
The chat-specific themes come with a disclaimer. It is only available on the beta version of WhatsApp for Android users. It will be rolled out for iOS users with WhatsApp version 24.20.71. The features will be rolled out to other users in the coming days.
