Blue verification, or more verification blues?

WhatsApp to soon get blue ticks for Channels

Our perspectives on the iconic blue tick, also known as the verification badge, has changed a lot over the past year. Once a symbol of notability reserved for a select few, the blue tick today can be achieved by anyone who can afford monthly subscription fee on both X and Instagram. Now, the check mark is also coming to WhatsApp, and yes, it will most-likely still be paid.

A new report by WABetaInfo has revealed that WhatsApp is working on a feature to bring WhatsApp blue ticks to Channels, allowing WhatsApp Business users to display their profiles with a blue badge instead of the default green one. This move would allow all Meta properties to have a uniform colour and symbol for verified profiles and businesses.

Who can get a WhatsApp blue tick?

While it hasn’t been confirmed yet, it is very likely that the WhatsApp blue tick will also come from the Meta Verified subscription, which may soon also include the world’s most used instant messaging service on smartphones.

The report also suggests that only WhatsApp Business users will be able to add the badge to their profiles. Individuals and non-Business users will not be able to get the WhatsApp Blue Tick, at least for now.

Further, it also appears that getting the badge would also mean WhatsApp Channels will be restricted to showing the same name and profile picture as their verified business, which makes sense given that the whole point of the feature is to help users identify authentic businesses.

When is WhatsApp getting Blue Tick channels?

With the feature currently only seen in a closed beta version of the app for Android phones, it is difficult to predict when Meta will actually go live with the feature, which could take weeks or months. Of course, there’s also the small possibility of the feature being completely dropped too!

Either way, if you’re someone running an authentic channel on WhatsApp, we recommend taking other measures to display your authenticity meanwhile, like manually changing your profile picture and name to match that of your channel.
