What is the power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC?

Here’s how much power your 1.5 Ton AC needs

What is the power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC?

Wondering what the power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC is? The answer, you might be surprised to learn, depends on more than one reason. Air conditioners have become indispensable appliances for keeping cool in homes and offices, and we’ve increasingly relied on them for comfort. In this guide, we’ll explain what the power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC is and the factors that influence its power consumption.

What is the power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC?

The power consumption of a 1.5 Ton AC depends on its energy rating. Higher star ratings indicate greater energy efficiency, meaning the AC will use less electricity to cool your space. For instance, a 5-star AC can use up to 28 per cent less energy than a 3-star AC. While a 1-star AC might be cheaper initially, its higher operating cost may outweigh the upfront savings. So, choosing an AC with a higher star rating can be more economical in the long run.

Now, let’s explore how to calculate the monthly electricity consumption of a 1.5 Ton air conditioner. While a higher star rating generally indicates better energy efficiency, the actual power usage depends on factors like daily running hours and the AC’s Efficiency Rating (EER or COP) found in the specifications. We can estimate the hourly consumption by multiplying the AC capacity (tons) by a base value (around 1.5 kWh).

To calculate the monthly energy consumption (in kWh) of a specific AC, you can use the formula: kWh consumed per month = kWh consumed by the AC per hour * Daily running hours * Number of days in the month

For example, for a branded 1.5 kW AC that runs for 10 hours a day, assuming a base consumption of 1.5 kW per hour and a 30-day month: Monthly Energy Consumption  = 1.5 kWh/hour * 10 hours/day * 30 days = 450 kWh.

Next, to calculate the electricity consumed by AC in a month, let us assume Rs. 7 as the per-unit cost of the electricity. Hence, the electricity bill for AC in a month = Units per month * Cost of one unit. Now, putting our estimated values into the formula, we get 450 units * Rs. 7 = Rs. 3150.

What are the factors that affect AC power consumption?

Depending on both the size (tonnage) of your air conditioner and its energy rating, there are a number of factors that affect the AC power consumption. Here are some of the common ones:

1. The number of people in a room affects the AC power consumption. For example- a room of 20-25 people requires multiple ACs, whereas a room with 3-5 people requires a single AC to cool the room.

2. The size of the room plays a major role when it comes to AC power consumption. The larger the room, the more the AC power consumption will be. Similarly, smaller rooms consume less electricity to cool down.

3. The temperature outside and inside the room affects the AC electricity consumption. If the temperature outside is more than 35 degrees, the AC requires more electricity to cool the room.

4. More electrical appliances inside the room generate more heat, which eventually increases the AC power consumption to cool the room.

5. 5 star rated AC helps in saving energy, whereas 1-star or 2-star ACs demonstrate higher AC power consumption.

6. The choice of AC like window AC, Inverter AC, split AC, or central AC also affects the AC power consumption.
