A common question you may often be asked when buying a new gadget, whether a smartphone, laptop or tablet, is how much memory you’re looking for. Have you ever wondered just what one means when referring to memory, though? Read on.
Memory: What it is and how many types there are
When it comes to electronics, memory can mean multiple things depending on the context and the device you are referring to.
Memory, in the simplest definition, refers to the storage capacity of any electronic device such as a smartphone or computer. The term is used to describe the amount of data that can be stored on a device on its hard drive.
In a computer, memory can be of two types; primary memory or main storage and secondary memory. Primary memory or RAM (Random Access Memory) stores data temporarily. It is a type of volatile memory. This means to say, the data set stored in it gets deleted when you turn off the power and shut your device. Secondary memory or secondary storage, on the other hand, refers to an external storage device that can be used to store data on a long-term basis. Secondary memory can further be mainly of two types: HDDs or Hard disk drives, and SSDs or Solid State drives.

The type of memory and the technology a given device uses has a significant impact on the overall performance of the same. A more efficient and powerful memory can make your device run a little smoother and be a bit more powerful as well.
