While timelapse is a well-known camera mode, hyperlapse is an advanced photography mode that takes timelapse videos to a whole new level. Timelapse video is captured by placing the camera in a fixed position whereas hyperlapse allows for dynamic camera movement over large distances. This provision to physically move the camera changes the narrative in a big way.
Modern smartphones and cameras often include a dedicated hyperlapse mode that makes the process of stabilising the camera while also moving it easier. In the case of GoPro, the hyperlapse mode is called TimeWarp and the result is often a fast-paced video that compresses time while combining the dynamism of the visual perspective.
Hyperlapse camera mode: What is it
Hyperlapse is not new and has been used in applications such as travel vlogs, nature documentaries, architectural showcases, etc. It differs from timelapse by emphasising on-camera motion. If timelapse is all about recording changes over time, hyperlapse allows you to do that while also recording changes in a scene.
The result of shooting in hyperlapse camera mode is often one where you sense the journey as well as the evolution. However, it is not easy to shoot a hyperlapse video since it requires planning and execution. The most effective way to capture hyperlapse is to use a modern smartphone like some Samsung models with a dedicated mode. You can also use newer GoPro models to shoot hyperlapse with minimal efforts.
Hyperlapse video: How to use it
The first step to capturing a hyperlapse video is to choose your scene, since this camera mode won’t be suited for recording any and every activity. While choosing the scene, look for one with dynamic motion and ensure that there is enough light for sharp images. Once you have these basics covered, here are the steps to follow to record hyperlapse video:
Step 1: Open the camera app on your smartphone and select “Hyperlapse” or similar mode.
Step 2: Choose your desired speed where higher speeds create faster motion effects.
Step 3: Now, keep the device steady by using either a gimbal or a stabiliser.
Step 4: Start recording while walking, cycling, or moving along a predetermined path.
Step 5: Once the hyperlapse video is captured, enhance it further by using editing software.
While shooting a hyperlapse video, it is important to keep the subject centred by panning slightly and maintaining a consistent pace to avoid jerky transitions. The best part of a hyperlapse video is its ability to condense hours or even days into seconds. They serve as a powerful storytelling tool and can be used to highlight movement, scale, and transformation.

Whether you are an amateur or a professional, hyperlapse camera mode is a clever way to transform your storytelling. With hyperlapse video, you can bring dynamism to your videos and they are particularly useful when creating social media content or creative projects.
