What is firmware?

What is firmware?

Chances are, you may not have heard the term firmware very frequently. We don’t blame you either since it doesn’t exactly come up when purchasing a gadget of any sort. It is, however, an integral part of your gadgets, nevertheless. So, let’s take a look at just what it is and why it is important.

What exactly is firmware?

Firmware is essentially a code embedded into devices’ hardware, which helps them function optimally. This could include anything from your smartphones and laptops to TV remotes, printers, routers, and more. It provides instructions to hardware to help it start up and communicate with other devices, as well as perform tasks. It can be thought of as the software which enables hardware to run.

Similar to how the operating system regulates the functioning of programmes on a given system, firmware is used to govern the hardware on devices.

Where is firmware stored?

Firmware is usually stored in a device’s non-volatile memory. Non-volatile memory is a form of static RAM, wherein information is saved when a hardware device is turned off or loses external power. Flash memory, erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM), and read-only memory (ROM) can all be used to store firmware.

Firmware updates and why they are important

Manufacturers keep regularly releasing firmware updates such that their products devices remain secure at all times, and also compatible with newer forms of media. For example, Android and iOS devices get firmware updates regularly, which helps enhance their performance, adds new functionalities, and also protects them from security threats. Firmware updates are usually initiated by by accepting prompts to allow for the system to download the updates and install the same.

Although not exactly mandatory, it is always a good idea to keep one’s device’s firmware up to date. When a firmware update is started though, it is necessary to always allow it to finish, or one’s system may not be able to function properly, as the firmware may not be recognised.

Keeping one’s device’s firmware also has its advantages when switching to a newer device – since changes may be made without having to replace the hardware.
