While setting up your home, going about buying air conditioners for cooling the same, it is also equally important to ensure the air it circulates inside is clean, free of any contaminants, right? Well, to help with just that, we have two words for you: Air filters. Here’s what air filters are, how they work, and why they’re important.
What is an air filter?
An air filter acts as a vital component in all ACs, and is intended to enhance the air quality in a room by intercepting any particles and contaminants which may come in through the AC otherwise. They can intercept everything from dust and small debris, pollen as well as any other airborne bacteria and prevent them from circulating freely.
In essence, they act like a barrier, trapping the particles before they can enter the system. They are especially important for maintaining a healthy indoor environment, since airborne particles can aggravate allergies, or even cause respiratory issues in the long run.

Additionally, air filters in ACs also prevent dust and debris from collecting on crucial components, and thus ensures that they continue to run efficiently and last as long as possible.
Types of air filters
Air filters come in several different shapes and sizes, each designed for a well-defined purpose. Examples of the different types include fiberglass, pleated, and HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, amongst others. Fiberglass filters can capture the large particles economically. The pleated filters provide a higher level of filtration by trapping smaller particles. Renowned for their high efficiency, HEPA filters are frequently implemented where top notch air quality is a must – such as hospitals.
Routine maintenance of air filters is a critical step to ensure their operation. In the long run, capturing this particulate matter can clog the filters, decreasing the airflow and efficiency of the system. Replacement or cleaning should be done periodically depending on the type of filter to be used, to guarantee maximum efficiency.
