What is a router?

Mobile data today is extremely cheap and reliable, whether in terms of speed or conenctivity. However, any internet user also knows that to experience truly high-speed internet, a broadband connection still remains the go-to.

Now, while setting up a broadband connection in your homes, a term you may have stumbled upon is A router. You perhaps know that a router is an integral part of setting an internet connection. However, have you ever wondered just why that is? Read on, for we’re here to tell you just that.

What is a router and what does it do?

A router is used to connect to the internet through a Wide Area Network (WAN) connection. In other words, it is a networking device which routes and directs data packets between computer networks. They allow data to be transmitted between different networks and enable devices to access the internet and other networks.

Routers work by receiving a data packet from one network, examining its destination address, and then forwarding it to the appropriate network.

Thus, it has two primary functions: managing traffic between networks by forwarding data packets to their intended IP address, and allowing multiple devices such as your laptop and smartphone to use the same internet connection.

Even though routers have both Local Area Network (LAN) as well as WAN ports, they are typically used to connect to the interent through WAN. There are various types of routers available in the market avai;able today – including wired and wireless models, and even ones with VPN in-built.
