Internet of things has quickly proliferated into our lives, and an increasing number of devices at our home are getting ‘smart’.One of the key components of any smart home is smart lighting technology. So let’s learn about a technology that you are going to adopt, perhaps sooner than later
What is smart lighting technology?
Smart lighting is an advanced way to light your home. The term SMART in technology refers to “Self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology”. It can be understood as a well-integrated system that includes smart light bulbs, panels, strips, and various other fittings that can be controlled remotely. These all components contain software that connects to an app, smart home assistant, and other smart accessories so you can automate your lights.
Benefits of smart lighting technology
It eliminates the need for a traditional lighting system and has plenty of benefits over it. Some of them are as follows.
Save energy: The bulbs used in smart lighting technology are LED. They are six times more energy efficient than incandescent lighting. The lighting system is automated thus, it takes human error out of the pictures. You only use lights when it is required and can turn them off or on from anywhere.
Scheduling: One of the perks of smart lighting is that you can schedule when the lights turn on and off via the app. This is an incredible feature that makes it hassle-free for you to worry about switching lights on and off around the house. You can set it up once and then forget about it.

Remotely control: There are apps through which you can control the lights thus, it takes out the need to physically switch on and off lights. This can come in handy in a number of scenarios.
Convenience: One of the major key benefits of smart light is ease and convenience. Motion-based smart lights can detect your presence and turn on automatically without you having to fumble across the room and struggle to find the switch. Together with so many features, it lends a unique blend of ease of use and convenience.
How do they work?
A smart light can be operated and controlled in the following three ways.
Mobile apps and voice assistants: This is one of the most prevalent methods to upgrade your conventional lights and make them smart lights. There will be a dedicated app and your phone will connect to the bulb via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or smart assistant. Apart from Bluetooth, all require an internet connection to work.
Motion sensing Smart Bulb: These work automatically based on sensing movement in the surrounding. They use motion sensors to detect this movement. Once this sensor detects motion, it sends a signal to a Hub or directly to the bulb to turn on.
IFTTT: It stands for If This Then That. It is a simple logical premise. It is a condition-based technology. For instance, you must have seen a bulb that turns on automatically just when you enter your home. And they aren’t motion sensors or scheduled either. These work IFTTT. They geo-locate your presence in the area and thus smartly turn on the lights.
