Waves is a new homegrown OTT platform that brings nostalgia to your smartphone screen

Ask anyone from your parents’ generation about what they liked to watch on TV during their childhood, and they will most likely recount stories of being huddled around a TV, watching shows such as Ramayan, Waghle ki Duniya, Hum Log, and the like. What also came with those were ad breaks, and of course, pretty much the only one choice of TV channel – Doordarshan.

Fast forward to today, and Doordarshan’s parent organisation – Prasar Bharati, has just launched a new OTT platform. Called ‘Waves’, read on to know everything about the latest OTT platform.

What is Waves?

Doordarshan has just introduced what may be the coolest new thing on the block. Waves attempts to revive the nostalgia of the late 80s and the early 90s and present it in a clean, modern package, accessible on the go.

The platform offers content in over 12 languages including Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Punjabi, and more, and over 10 different genres. Additionally, the platform also gets a free radio streaming feature, which streams over 65 TV channels live, as well as live sporting events and more – examples of which include the upcoming US Premier League Cricket Tournament.

What’s also cool is the vast offering of classic Doordarshan programming on offer, which includes Ramayan, Mahabharat, and Shaktimaan. Interestingly, Waves also gets several original productions including Kakbhushundi Ramayana that draws from over 350 global adaptations of the epic, as well as modern reimaginations of classic shows such as Fauji (which launched Shah Rukh Khan’s career), in the form of Fauji 2.0.

Besides this, Waves also gets several popular animated series including Tenali Rama and Chhota Bheem, all of which goes to show that the platform has something in store for folks across age groups and geographies.

Where can you access Prasar Bharati’s new OTT platform?

Waves is free to download for smartphones, tablets as well as smart TVs. Note that subscriptions can be purchased only from the platform’s website – wavespb.com, as the Waves app doesn’t support in-app purchases yet.

There are three plans on offer – Platinum priced at Rs 999 per year, Diamond priced at Rs 350 per year, and Gold priced at Rs 350 per year. What’s nice is that all three tiers offer you unfettered access to all of the content available on the platform.

The Gold plan doesn’t allow for offline viewing, and the three plans have a four, two and one device limit respectively. It is also important to note here that picture quality across the three plans is capped at 1080p, 720p and 480p, and that Platinum plan subscribers can also avail a 10 per cent discount on Transactional Video on Demand (TVoD) services.

Waves is an extremely unique offering in its own right. It offers classic Indian programming which lets us relive the nostalgia of growing up in pre-liberalisation India, at affordable rates on-the-go.
