Ultrahuman Ring Air hands-on and first impressions

Can this ring actually track your health? I’ve lost count of the number of times people around me have asked after seeing the new Ultrahuman Ring Air on my finger. Smart rings are still a new idea for many but have come a long way since the first Oura Ring launched back in 2015.

Lately, we have seen the launch of a number of smart rings, the latest being from Samsung. But what we have today on our hands (or rather finger) is the new Ultrahuman Ring Air. Having spent some time with it, here are my first impressions.

Before you get your hands on the smart ring, you’ll first need to go through the sizing process. You get a sizing kit with plastic rings of various sizes to help you choose the right fit. Once selected, you can place an order for the Ultrahuman smart ring. Quick tip, order a size bigger. Since the sensors take up a bit of space on the inside, the ring isn’t the exact size as the ones in the kit.

Ultrahuman’s ring comes in a nice box, which also has a charger, braided cables, and instruction manuals bundled. When you remove the ring from the box for the first time, you’ll be taken by surprise how light it is. At 2.4 grams, it is lightweight, and as the Ultrahuman website claims, as much as 11x lighter than a typical smartwatch.

In terms of its looks, the ring is as spartan as it gets with a smooth metallic finish. We’ve received Raw Titanium variant, which in my opinion looks classy. It however remains to be seen how the smooth finish holds up when put through the rigours of the gym.

On the inside of the ring, the sensors are visible thanks to the transparent cover, which reminds us of Nothing’s products. It’s a nice little touch, and is a great way to merge the classic ring design with modern technology.

Ultrahuman app and initial setup

To pair the ring with a smartphone (Android or iOS), you’ll need to download the Ultrahuman app. After logging in, the initial setup is quite straightforward. To pair, the ring needs to be placed on the bundled charger, connected to a power output, and only then it connects with the smartphone over Bluetooth.

The setup process also includes sharing a few personal details like age, weight and height. Once the basic tracking starts, all the relevant health metrics are shown on the app homepage. The sheer amount of information on screen may feel a tad overwhelming at first. But once you get used to it, then everything starts making sense. Think of it as the map of the London Tube. All the lines feel like spider webs at first, until they don’t.

From your workouts to sleep and everything in between, the Ultrahuman ring can track a host of health and fitness metrics. The question however is how accurate is the Ring Air, and it is something that plan to find out during our review.

The first 24 hours with the Ultrahuman Ring Air have been interesting to say the least. It’s garnered a bit of attention from my office colleagues, who are quite intrigued about how a ring can track fitness activities and other health metrics. We are well and truly in the midst of a fitness tracking transition from our wrists to our fingers.

So, is the Ultrahuman Ring Air the smart ring to rule them all? I can’t wait to put it through our tests to find out. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for a detailed review.
