Scam calls today are considered a common nuisance and almost every second person we know has been a victim to one. In fact, with technology, scammers, too, have found the gateway to conduct sophisticated scams using unwanted calls or messages. Keeping its growing need in mind, Truecaller has announced an AI call scanner that is designed to detect scam calls within seconds.
The smartphone app, which is popularly known for its Call ID and call-blocking features, will soon also be able to differentiate between human and AI-synthesised voices.
What is Truecaller AI call scanner?
In a statement, the company mentions how the feature was brought in to tackle the ‘next wave’ of AI-based voice scams. It further states how scammers today have been preying on victims using a ‘vulnerable side of the psyche’ and have begun imitating their loved ones on call.

On receiving a call, the user will be able to see a dedicated button in the app interface which will allow them to record the ongoing communication. Post this, the conversation is recorded and analysed using Truecaller’s AI scanner, which will then alert the user in case of an AI-processed voice. The company states how the app will be able to do this all within a span of three seconds.
According to Truecaller, the feature is trained ‘vigorously’ and can identify human speech based on its unique characteristics. It additionally plans to improve the tool based on user feedback and other training data.
When will Truecaller's AI call scanner be available to users?
The AI call scanner, as of today, has been announced for Android app users and will only be available to Premium subscribers. It has currently been announced for users based in the US. While the company has yet to mention its plans of expansion to other countries or iOS devices, there is a good chance that it may roll out gradually within a course of weeks.
The news also comes after Google announced an Android 15 scam-detection feature for smartphones at Google I/O 2024. While there is no doubt a need to address rising scamsters in today’s time, there will always be growing concerns about privacy and the inability to have private conversations. But with regulations and time, there is still a good chance brand might soon be able to reinforce artificial intelligence technology in the right direction.
