Tinder’s new AI chatbots will now help you slide into those DMs

Imagine a digital wingman who will always text you back — and never let you down! Tinder just dropped a ‘flirty AI game’ that is aimed at users who want to practice their moves before swiping right on someone.

Parent company Match Group Inc. mentions how this innovation is to escape the otherwise awkward conversations and for users to feel a little more confident before they step into online dating. The gamified conversations come powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4o technology and can provide romcom scenarios to help users up their A-game. Here’s how it will work.

Tinder 'The Game' game: What it is and what it can do

Think of Tinder’s AI-powered game as a training ground before you date. ‘The Game’ comes up with bizarre dating scenarios to help you navigate and talk your way through with the chatbot. If that’s not all, the chatbot also reacts and responds to you in real time. Wondering how it works? Check it out.

Step 1: Open the Tinder app on your smartphone, tap on the logo and choose a wacky, AI-generated dating scenario based on your preference

Step 2: Once you do, you will have to respond using your voice. You can choose to be witty, funny or even wing it based on your scenario

Step 3: The AI chatbot will then rate your game on a three-flame scale. If you’re good, you might just get all three flames! If you flopped, you might just get roasted

It’s important to note that no matter what, AI will give you feedback (good or bad) to better your game. This could be in the form of asking better questions, or toning down that sarcasm a notch!

What does this mean for the future of dating?

Match Group Inc.’s move has garnered mixed reactions across the virtual world. While some believe AI has gone too far, others seem hopeful, knowing there’s technology to help them get through their awkward dating phase. Helpful or not, this wouldn’t be the first time artificial intelligence has played a catalyst for relationships. At the beginning of this year, the online dating smartphone app Hinge, too, brought in AI-powered responses that can help users ‘communicate better’.

Will virtual practice sessions lead to more confident real-world connections, or are we witnessing the first step toward a future where our most intimate conversations happen with code instead of humans? Only time (and maybe your swipe history!) will tell.
