Do you remember the classical educational game The Oregon Trail? This game took you along the Oregon trail while facing challenges faced by the protagonists painting the history of the route and offering insights into the past. Wouldn’t it be exciting if this game was turned into a movie?
A new movie inspired by the game is now said to be in development at Apple Original Films. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.
The Oregon Trail movie adaptation
The Oregon Trail was created in 1971. It reached cult status among American children by the 90s as it was one of the first educational computer games that was allowed in schools. It featured dark storylines filled with typhoid, dysentery, and broken arms.
While the movie is still in early development, a few decisions have been made. The Lucas Brothers and their writing partner Max Reisman are penning the script of the movie to mimic the 19th century times. Along with Kevin K. Vafi, Caroline Fraser will produce the film under Harper Collins Productions, who own the rights to the video game franchise.

Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who are known for Blades of Glory and Office Christmas Party, will direct and produce the movie. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who recently earned an Emmy for the third season of Only Murders in the Building, will compose original music for the movie. These four men previously worked together on the musical movie Lyle, Lyle Crocodile. They have now joined hands to make the Oregon Trail movie.
The cast of the film has not been finalised yet. Details about the plot have also not been mentioned. The movie was pitched to Apple, and it has been picked up by the studio. Reportedly, the film will not have a historical tone. Instead, it will be a musical with comedic elements on the lines of Barbie.
While we wait for the movie to be made and released, you can play the classic game, which is available to play on Apple devices like iPhones, iPads, Apple TV and iMac through Apple Arcade.
