The iPhone SE series has not been refreshed in a while, but if there’s one thing we can expect from the device, it is a detour from the traditional design approach Apple has taken previously with other models in the series. All three generations of the iPhone SE so far have taken on the pre-iPhone X design, have featured thick bezels, a Touch ID button, and are rather small in size, similar to the iPhone 8. That is set to change very soon.
Numerous leaks and rumours from the past year have pointed to the fact that the iPhone SE could come with a newer design, one that brings it in line with the current iPhone lineup, not how the iconic Apple smartphones looked 10 years ago. Now, a new leak suggests the device will also pack a Dynamic Island-style notch.
The change will mean the iPhone SE 4 (name not yet confirmed) could look a lot like the newer iPhone series, particularly the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series. For some context, even phones like the base iPhone 14 from two years ago don’t have the Dynamic Island notch.
What this means for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 series
The iPhone will likely be on par with the iPhone 15 or iPhone 16 series when it comes to performance, but will likely miss out on some aspects like auxiliary cameras, MagSafe charging, etc. Not much is currently known about where Apple will cut costs to make the phone more affordable that the vanilla iPhone.

Previous leaks have also suggested that the next iPhone SE will also be equipped for Apple Intelligence features, Apple’s AI suite that the brand has been bringing across its entire product portfolio, including entry-level iPads and Macs.
All this considered, the phone could be a good alternative to potential iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 buyers, as it is likely to be equipped with newer hardware under the hood, even at the expense of a few missing hardware extras. Unsurprisingly, the phone is also expected to be cheaper, which would make it more of a tempting deal among other phones in the upper mid-range segment.
Other leaks, meanwhile, have suggested that the phone may not even retain the ‘iPhone SE’ moniker, and that it could be called the iPhone 16E instead.
This, and a lot of other details around the iPhone SE are yet to be confirmed though, and we should ideally be taking all these rumours with a pinch of salt until then, as Apple is known for its last-minute surprises.
