If you thought foldable smartphones are just a fad, then think again. An increasing number of smartphone makers are jumping onto the bandwagon, and the latest to do so is Tecno. The smartphone maker has announced that it will be launching its new flagship Phantom V Fold device at Mobile World Congress 2023. The expo will kick off in Barcelona, Spain from February 28.
Why should you pay attention to the Tecno Phantom V Fold?
The Phantom V Fold will be the world’s first left-right foldable smartphone, and will be powered by MediaTek’s flagship Dimensity 9000+ SoC. The chip is optimised for a large-screen design, and is capable of tackling the battery drain issue often faced by foldable phones.
A short video released by Tecno on its official twitter handle reveals a camera design similar to the company’s current flagship device, the Phantom X2 Pro. The power key visible on the side is expected to most likely feature an in-built fingerprint scanner. Furthermore, the hinge closes completely, leaving a zero gap between both sides when folded.
So far, the only foldable smartphone available in markets outside of China is South Korean smartphone manufacturer Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold4 device. However, it is finally set to see some competition from the Phantom V Fold device, along with the upcoming Honor Magic Vs.
Pricing and Availability
Details around the specs of the Tecno Phantom V Fold device remain tightly under wraps as of now, and are expected to be revealed directly at the launch. Furthermore, the company has also not revealed its launch dates and pricing in India and international markets as of yet, with details expected to be revealed at the launch itself.
Tecno recently unveiled the Phantom X2 and Phantom X2 Pro. Both devices are also powered by MediaTek’s latest Dimensity 9000 chipset, with 8GB of RAM available on the Phantom X2, while the Phantom X2 Pro features 12GB of RAM.
The Phantom X2 and the X2 Pro feature a curved 6.8-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection, with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate, as well as an in-display fingerprint sensor. Under their hood is a 5,160mAh battery which supports 45W fast charging.
The Tecno Phantom X2 Pro features a triple-camera setup at the rear, with the first retractable portrait lens in a smartphone, in the world- a 50MP Samsung JN1 portrait camera lens with support for 2.5x telephoto zoom, along with a 50MP Samsung GNC primary camera, as well as a 13MP Samsung 3L6 ultra-wide lens. The Tecno Phantom X2, on the other hand, is offered with a 64MP Samsung GWB primary camera with OIS, a 13MP ultrawide lens, and a 2MP depth sensor.
