Sony’s PlayStation console has always been very popular amongst gamers, and the PS2 console is the best-selling one of all Sony consoles. A while back, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 2 crossed more than 150 million sales figures, and now, it has shared the updated figures with us, revealing that it has touched the 160 million mark.
Sony PlayStation 2 lifetime sales crossed 160 million
Sony, on its website, revealed the details of its all-time hit console. The company confirmed that the Sony PlayStation 2 is its highest-selling video game console of all time. But how many units total units sold? Well, according to Sony, over 160 million PS2 consoles were sold worldwide since its launch in 2000.

This is the only Sony console in the top three, as the iconic Nintendo DS takes the second position at 154.02 million units sold. The Nintendo Switch console comes next with 146 million consoles sold. Given that, the Sony’s PlayStation 2 console fared well.
The PlayStation 2 is far ahead of other Sony consoles in the top-selling race. In fact, the only other PlayStation to have crossed the 100 million mark, is the Sony PlayStation 4, which still sits below 120 million units. The newer PLayStation 5, which launched about four years ago, still sits at a humbling 65.5 million units.
As it looks, the only other gaming console that could have a chance of beating the Sony PS2 as the best-selling console is the handheld Nintendo Switch, which is available globally, but not officially in India.
While Sony hasn’t revealed any possible reasons for such an impressive sales figures of the two-decade old console, we reckon it could be due to its affordability and sheer bang-for-buck value, over the years of its availability.
The Sony PS2 was a great console for its time, but it wouldn’t stand a chance against today’s AAA games. The current-gen PlayStation 5, meanwhile, is capable of running the heaviest games. It can also let you game in 4K resolutions at 120 FPS (on supported displays) and sports features like ray tracing for a more realistic gaming experience.
If you never owned a PlayStation console before or want to upgrade to the latest PS5, this could just be the right time to get one. On that note, do check out the new PS5 Slim which you can pick up during our Black Friday sale, along with a bunch of other cool gadgets.
