Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 could finally make phones with on-device AI affordable

Qualcomm has launched the newest chipset in its Snapdragon 7-series. The new Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is more affordable than both the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, and brings some of the best features from both to more affordable devices.

Here’s all you need to know about the chipset and the smartphones it will power in the upcoming months.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3: What’s new?

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is a 4nm octa-core chipset with a prime core that can clock up to 2.5GHz, three performance cores that can clock up to 2.4GHz and four efficiency cores for low-end use that max out at 1.8GHz.

The chipset will support up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage speeds. Smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will also support USB 3.1 speed Type-C ports.

The Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 will also support FHD+ screens and external displays of up to 4K resolution at 60Hz. On the phone, the refresh rate can now go all the way to 144Hz.

Coming to camera capabilities, phones with the new chip can come with up to one 200MP camera or three 21MP cameras. The phones will also be able to record at 4K 30fps

Qualcomm also claims the chip supports on-device AI and will power features like multi-language translation and transcription in real-time, along with generative AI support.

Other features include support for 5G networks (both mmWave and sub-6GHz) via a new built-in modem. Lastly, the chip will also facilitate Qualcomm’s QuickCharge 4.0 standard allowing devices to charge at up to 100W speeds.

Android phones with the new chip are expected to launch as soon as next month, and multiple devices with the new chip and its AI capabilities could be up for grabs by the end of the year. How brands price these phones, however, will determine if the chip finally brings on-device AI to the masses.
