The demand for 5G smartphones has only gone up in India, now that the next-gen network has penetrated several regions beyond just the metro cities. That said, a lot of people still don’t want to spend premium prices on a 5G smartphone. To this end, chipmakers have been developing several affordable processors with built-in 5G modems. The latest of these is the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3.
A lower mid-range chip that is expected to bring 5G connectivity and generally good performance to Android phones positioned below the premium segment, the chipset comes with many key features. Here’s all you need to know.
Snapdragon 6 Gen 3: What’s new?
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 comes with a 4nm architecture, and four performance cores along with four efficiency cores. The performance cores are Cortex A78 ones, clocked at 2.4GHz, while the four efficiency ones are 1.8GHz Cortex A55 cores.

For the uninitiated, these cores work in tandem to optimise battery usage depending on what tasks are ongoing on the phone. The chipset will also support both LLDDR4x and LPDDR5 RAM modules, along with UFS 3.1 storage.
Qualcomm suggests the new chip offers 10 per cent better performance compared to the previous generation, along with 30 per cent better GPU performance, which should make smartphones with the chip better gaming and handling heavier applications.
The chip will also support some gaming-specific features like the Variable Rate Shading for even better graphical performance in demanding games.
Coming to camera capabilities, the new chip will support up to 200MP single-shot photos and thanks to the new Qualcomm Spectra Triple ISP, will be able to use AI in real-time for more effective denoising.
Along with supporting 5G networks, the chip will also support Wi-Fi 6 and 6E networks, along with Qualcomm’s FastConnect Mobile Connectivity System for high-quality audio playback over Bluetooth connections.
It remains to be seen what brands come with the new Qualcomm chip and when, but until then, you can check out the complete spec sheet on Qualcomm’s page, and stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma all things tech.
