Should you wirelessly charge your smartphone

A convenience or compromise?

Should you wirelessly charge your smartphone

n recent years, the smartphone industry has undergone significant changes. Bezel-less screens, advanced cameras, and AI integration often capture headlines. Among the many advancements, one unnoticeable change is in how we charge our smartphones.

Many flagship phones complement fast charging with wireless charging. In simple terms, they deliver a cable-free charging experience although the compatible charging pad requires a power connection. However, phones that support wireless charging also support wireless power banks for true mobility.

Fast charging is a game changer for those who need a decent amount of battery quickly in case it runs out or if you forget to refuel it. On the other hand, wireless charging is all about offering convenience. Both have their own set of advantages and drawbacks.

They are meant to serve different purposes and help in certain scenarios. Long story short, wired charging is the way to go if you want your phone fully topped up quickly. If you want ease of use and reduce cable clutter, then wireless charging is the answer. A compatible smartphone with both technologies offers the best of both worlds.

However, it still begs the question if wireless charging is worth it for your smartphone which is why we break certain things below in this story.

How does wireless charging work on smartphones?

Wireless charging seems like a simple concept but how it works raises more questions that need answers. In the case of a smartphone and a compatible charging pad, electricity is transferred between the two using an inductive charging method. The phone has a receiver coil for capturing energy to refuel the battery from the transmitter coil on the charging pad. The energy transfer that happens between the coils of two devices is called an electromagnetic field.

Benefits of wireless charging

1. The main advantage of wireless charging is that it eliminates the hassle of plugging and unplugging cables.

2. It reduces the wear and tear of the phone’s charging port as well as the cable.

3. Wireless charging pads are mostly Qi-certified, so they are also capable of charging other compatible devices like TWS earphones and smartwatches simultaneously. This removes the need to carry and keep different charging bricks and cables for each device.

4. Wireless charging is also safer, minimising the risk of short circuits as there are no exposed metal connectors.

Drawbacks of wireless charging

1. Wireless charging has slower charging speeds with even some premium offerings maxing out at 15W. This is solely the number one reason to avoid this tech if you want your phone charged in a matter of minutes as there is a huge difference when compared to wired charging.

2. Additionally, wireless charging generates more heat and prolonged exposure will negatively impact the battery health. Charging the phone with a thick case will also prevent it from cooling down.

3. Standard Qi wireless chargers lack magnets around the charging coil meaning that the phone must be properly aligned with the charging pad. This can be frustrating as the device may not charge at all or at a slower speed if it’s slightly off-centre.

4. In some cases, protective covers may also need to be removed which defeats the convenience factor of wireless charging. Compatible cases are expensive as well.

Wirelessly charging your smartphone offers convenience but it is not perfect. It may have implications on the battery if used frequently. One solution is to alternate between wired and wireless charging depending on the need. If your charging port is damaged, wireless charging is a good alternative.
