No more waking up shivering in the middle of the night

Samsung’s WindFree ACs will adjust to your sleep cycle

Air conditioners today can do more than just cool your space. From inverter technology to reversible ACs, brands today have incorporated plenty of features to prioritise comfort for users around the world.

In this pursuit, Samsung has recently introduced a ‘Good Sleep’ feature for its WindFree series of air conditioners that intelligently modify the temperature based on a user’s sleep cycle.

Samsung mentions how this feature is an upgrade that allows users to connect their Samsung WindFree AC with their Galaxy Watch series. Here’s how it works, and everything you need to know about it:

Samsung introduces 'Good Sleep' feature: What's there to know?

Sleep temperature preferences vary from person to person, and many people wake up at night when the room becomes too hot or cold for comfort. This, according to Samsung, is also why most people believe in setting an optimal temperature before falling asleep.

However, the brand in association with Kyunghee University, determined a ‘suitable’ temperature for each sleep stage. Apart from that, it also developed an algorithm that works with the air conditioner. Known as the ‘Good Sleep’ mode, it typically fluctuates the indoor temperature based on the person’s sleep cycle through the night.

A sleep cycle usually has five stages – wake, REM (Rapid eye movement), and three stages of NREM (Non-rapid eye movement sleep). Based on variations in brain wave patterns, eye movements, and body temperature, all these stages together make 90 minutes of a cycle. The study states that how this cycle repeats at least four to six times through the night.

Samsung states how the ‘Good Sleep’ mode begins by lowering the temperature within the first five minutes of a person’s sleep to create a pleasant environment. The temperature is kept low consistently during the next 90 minutes to facilitate deeper sleep.

Starting from 90 minutes, the air conditioner steadily increases the temperature to prepare for the deeper stages of sleep – N2 and N3. The brand mentions how these are the stages where the body temperature and blood pressure fall the most, indicating that the outer temperature needs to be warmer.

With this algorithm, the ‘Good Sleep’ mode constantly modifies the temperature within the room throughout an eight-hour cycle. Towards the end, Samsung states that the AC temperature is ‘kept high, but a gentle wind is blown for a refreshing atmosphere’.

How will Samsung's 'Good Sleep' mode work?

Once updated, Samsung’s Galaxy Watch can be connected to your Samsung WindFree AC to ensure ‘Good Sleep’. Samsung mentions how users don’t need to manually change settings on their remotes, as once the smartwatch is on, it automatically transitions to ‘Good Sleep’ once the user falls asleep.

For now, the brand hasn’t stated when the upgrade will be available for all users. That said, you can always come back to Unboxed by Croma for more updates, launches and news from Samsung.
