Samsung PolarID tipped to challenge Apple’s Face ID with ‘more secure’ technology

Samsung may incorporate new PolarID technology without adding any new sensors

Samsung PolarID tipped to challenge Apple’s Face ID with ‘more secure’ technology

Among many things, Apple is known for setting a benchmark with its smartphone facial recognition technology, which has been around for over eight years. But that might be set to change, as Samsung is reportedly working on a new, safer technology that could be included with its next Galaxy flagship release in 2025.

Unlike Apple’s Face ID which is powered using TrueDepth cameras, Samsung will be introducing an equivalent that does not require an additional sensor and thereby take up far less space.

Samsung PolarID: How will it work?

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by tipster Haizaki Ryouhei, the rival to Face ID is christened ‘PolarID’ and can make it to the market as early as the next couple of years. The technology, for now, has reached the pre-market stage, and it could be ready to ship on smartphones sometime in the near future.

The post also goes on to state how the addition will not require any extra sensors, thereby taking up minimal space on the device. It is likely to be integrated into Samsung’s punch-hole design and will offer a more ‘streamlined’ look to the smartphone.

Ryouhei also mentions how it could surpass Apple’s Face ID in terms of security by leveraging Qualcomm Snapdragon for processing and Samsung LSI (large-scale integration) for manufacturing.

The post concludes by mentioning that the Samsung ISOCELL Vizion 931 sensor is also currently being tested for this technology and could very well be incorporated in the next flagship release.

Samsung PolarID: Which Samsung smartphones will benefit from the new technology?

The post mentions how it could be a part of the next Galaxy S series smartphone release. However, as of today, it is hard to tell which other devices will make it to the list.

Another rumour also suggests that it may not make it to the brand’s 2025 release, and users may have to wait another year for it to potentially be available in the markets.

That said, none of these are set in stone, and it may be a long wait until Samsung rolls out an official statement. As per tradition, Samsung is gearing up to launch its next-gen foldable smartphones next month, widely expected to be called the Galaxy Flip6 and the Galaxy Fold6. Following that, we are bound to see the next-gen Galaxy S series of flagship smartphones early next year.
