Samsung One UI 6.1 brings screen burn-in protection: Here’s what this means

Samsung smartphones, whether it’s the budget M-series and F-series of smartphones, the mid-range A-series, or the flagship S-series of smartphones, are all known for their stunning displays. Samsung’s OLED displays have long been hailed as some of the best there are, owing to their vivid colours, rich contrasts, and general brightness.

However, a niggle users have had with them all the same, is that of screen burn-ins. Well, Samsung seems to have answered all their prayers and introduced a fix for it with the One UI 6.1 update. Read on to find out more.

What are screen burn-ins?

Screen burn-ins, for the unaware, are permanent discolourations caused on one’s screen due to static images being left on the screen for extended periods. They are an issue that for long have plagued laptops, smartphones, and TVs alike.

How does screen burn-in protection work?

The folks at Samsung have added a screen burn-in protection feature with the One UI 6.1 update, which causes UI elements with a fixed position on its devices to move ever so slightly every few seconds, to prevent burn-ins.

Initial tests revealed that the feature had been rolled out for the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, the company’s erstwhile flagship. However, as per Samsung watchdog SamMobile, the company has most likely released the feature for most of its premium phones, including the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S24 series, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 and Flip5.

Interestingly, Samsung had first rolled out the feature with the Android 13-based One UI 5.0 update, in October 2022. Strangely however, the feature was again found to be missing on the One UI 6.0 update, released in October last year.

What you should know about the One UI 6.1 update

One UI 6.1 has begun to roll out for Samsung devices globally. The update, in addition to the screen burn-in protection feature and smoother transitions, also introduces Galaxy AI features to several eligible devices. Galaxy AI brings to these devices several exciting features such as Circle to Search, live call transcriptions and translations, AI-powered image and video editing tools, and Note Assist.
