Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: What’s different?

What's new with Samsung's sixth-gen foldables, and is it enough to warrant an upgrade?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: What’s different?

Samsung has launched its new series of foldables in the form of the Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Galaxy Z Flip6. Needless to say, these devices come with a tweaked design and a host of new features.

But, if you’re using one of the older foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, you may be wondering what new upgrades are in store for you. To ease your mind, here’s a detailed comparison between the new Galaxy Z Fold6 and the Fold5.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: Display

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series is all about the folding displays, so let’s start there. The inner folding display is a big 7.6-inch one on both the Fold6 and Fold5. Both panels are also 120Hz AMOLED panels. However, the new display on the Fold6 can fold completely flat, unlike any of the previous Galaxy foldables.

The outer display is also slightly different. Instead of a 6.2-inch display, you now have a 6.3-inch display. However, both displays have similar specifications like an AMOLED panel and 120HZ refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: Design

Samsung has made some significant design changes with the new Fold6. Take for instance the IP48 certification, making it the first Galaxy foldable to feature an official rating against dust ingress.

The new phone is also the thinnest in the Galaxy Z Fold series. The Fold6 measures 153.5 x 132.6 x 5.6 mm (unfolded) and 153.5 x 68.1 x 12.1 mm (folded). In comparison, the Fold5 measures at 154.9 x 129.9 x 6.1 mm (unfolded) and 154.9 x 67.1 x 13.4 mm (folded).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: Performance

The next big change between the two foldables come in the performance department. The Galaxy Z Fold6 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, which comes with on-device AI support, powering some of the coolest features in the Galaxy AI suite.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 comes with an older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which continues to be a pretty powerful chipset. On paper though, it is slightly behind the 8 Gen 3 when it comes to max clock speeds, or the graphics and gaming performance.

Other aspects like the battery have not changed, and both phones feature a 4,400mAh battery with the same charging speeds – 25W (wired), 15W (wireless) and 4.5W (reverse wireless charging).

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: Cameras

Both phones feature the same 50MP main camera sensor and a 10MP 3x telephoto sensor, so the performance should be the same here. However, Samsung has added an updated 12MP ultrawide camera sensor, which should allow better ultrawide pictures in low-light.

Overall, don’t expect the Galaxy Z Fold6 to take significantly better images than the Galaxy Z Fold5, at least from the hardware perspective.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 vs Galaxy Z Fold5: Software

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Fold5 both come with Samsung’s One UI skin, and are currently running Android 14. However, while the Fold5 was promised four years of Android updates, the Fold6 will get seven years of updates just like the Galaxy S24 series.

Unboxed take: Should you get the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6?

If you’re someone looking to splurge on their first premium foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold6 is a great buy. It is also a good upgrade for anyone coming from an older foldable – unless the older foldable in question is the Galaxy Z Fold5.

That’s because when compared to its predecessor, the Fold6 only features minor changes which may not be appealing enough to a lot of people for a full upgrade. However, if you must have the new features, the IP48 certification and the flat-folding design, be sure to check out our pre-reserve options for the Galaxy Z Fold6.
