Samsung has officially launched its flagship Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones. As expected, they bring in several exciting upgrades, including on-board Galaxy AI.
But that isn’t the only exciting bit about the devices. At the event, Samsung also guaranteed seven generations of operating system (OS) updates and seven years of security updates for its new phones. This means you could potentially expect updates up till Android 21 for your S-series smartphone.
Which devices does the 7-year update policy apply to?
The new update policy comes two years after its 2022 announcement, when Samsung had committed to four years of One UI updates, and five years of security updates for many of its devices at the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S22 series.
Now bear in mind that the company said that the new policy will start with and apply to all devices in the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. For now, it doesn’t look likely that it will apply to the Samsung Galaxy S23, and other premium Samsung devices such as the Fold5, and Flip5 series.
This is in contrast to the previous announcement in 2022, when the company gave out a list of smartphones, and tablets, new and old, which will be covered under the policy. Moreover, they also don’t mention if the policy applies to future Galaxy devices, such as the Fold and Flip6, or if it is exclusively reserved for the Galaxy S-series lineup of smartphones.
