Samsung Galaxy S23 series: Should you still buy Samsung’s old flagships in 2024?

Get the S23 series, or wait for the S24 series? We help you decide

Samsung Galaxy S23 series: Should you still buy Samsung’s old flagships in 2024?

Samsung is set to launch its new Galaxy S24-series phones later today, and the new devices are expected to pack in more performance, better cameras, and a host of new AI features thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip.

That said, users looking to buy a new flagship phone will still be able to grab the older Galaxy S23 series. The Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ also recently received a massive Rs 10,000 price cut ahead of the launch of the new phones.

This raises a yearly question – are Samsung’s 2023 flagships good enough to pick up right now? Let’s dive deeper and find out, beginning with what new features are expected on the 2024 phones.

Samsung Galaxy S24 series: What’s expected?

Multiple leaks have suggested that the Galaxy S24 series will not feature many design changes over the S23 series. So, if it is a new design you’re looking for, you may not find a lot of difference with the new phones.

That said, there are rumours of the Galaxy S24 series featuring Titanium bodies, similar to the iPhone 15 Pro series. Samsung’s launch will confirm this, but we think it should make the phones more durable.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy S24 series is expected to pack more performance with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, including new aspects like on-device AI features and ray-tracing support, the latter being ideal for gamers. Apart from this, some improvements to the camera setup are also expected.

Should you still buy S23-series phones?

It seems the main difference on the new S24 series phones will be the (likely exclusive) features powered by the new Snapdragon chipset. However, apart from that, you may not see a noticeable difference in day-to-day performance, unless you’re a consistent heavy user.

Remember that the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra were also launched as flagship phones with at least four years of performance. However, the S24 series is expected to get seven years of software support, if rumours are to be believed. That’s four more years after the S23 series gets its last Android update.

On the other hand, to compensate for the fewer updates, Samsung has made the S23-series much more affordable, with some recent price drops. In terms of value-for-money, most buyers may find these phones to be a better deal compared to the upcoming S24 series.

However, with the launch of the Galaxy S24 series merely hours away at this point, it makes more sense for buyers to wait before they make up their minds. You will be able to make a better decision once details including all the new capabilities of the S24 series as well as the pricing are made available.
