Samsung DeX for Windows is being discontinued

Microsoft's Link to Windows is what Samsung recommends you to use

Samsung DeX for Windows is being discontinued

Samsung is bidding goodbye to the DeX mode for Windows, a feature that allows users to link their Samsung smartphone with their desktop for seamless file transfers. The company confirmed that from One UI 7, the Samsung DeX mode will no longer work on Windows. Instead, Samsung has suggested an alternative for the same.

Here’s everything you need to know about Samsung DeX and how its discontinuation on Windows may affect you.

What is DeX mode?

To put it simply, Samsung DeX enables you to turn your Galaxy S and Z series smartphone or flagship-grade tablet into a true desktop PC experience. This means you can simply connect your smartphone to a display using the USB-C to HDMI cable and use your Samsung flagship device like a PC. It allows users to make seamless file transfers on a big display, making things convenient.

Why is it being shut down?

While Samsung DeX is a useful feature, Samsung is discontinuing it on the Windows OS with its next One UI update. The Samsung UK website has revealed that DeX for PC on Windows OS will end support from One UI 7. Unfortunately, Samsung hasn’t given us a reason as to why it is discontinuing it on Windows.

What’s the alternative?

Samsung itself has suggested an alternative to DeX on Windows, and it’s Microsoft’s Link to Windows feature. Although Link to Windows is nowhere similar to DeX, it still allows for seamless file transfers. But you will have to miss out on the ‘true desktop PC experience’ on Windows that Samsung has always been advertising.

How Samsung DeX users may get affected

As mentioned above, if you are a Samsung DeX user, you will have to miss out on the PC experience. This means, you can’t manage those Excel sheets like before or mirror your screen for movie watching or gaming.

However, the Link to Windows app is a good alternative that not only allows you to transfer files, but also lets you make calls and check messages. You can also view your photo gallery and save media from your phone in your PC.

DeX isn’t fully going away

It’s worth noting that while DeX for PC on Windows won’t work from One UI 7, the DeX mode in itself isn’t going away. The DeX mode on Samsung tablets will continue to work, allowing for a true PC experience.
