Ever since the switch from TouchWiz to OneUI, Samsung has been steadily climbing its way up to the top of Android-based software skins. The brand took a huge step a couple of years ago by announcing that it will offer four years of system updates and five years of security updates for most of its mid-range lineups and all its flagship phones. Now, the brand may be looking to one-up itself by offering even longer software support.
As per a new report by 9to5Google, Samsung may be gearing up to equip the upcoming Galaxy S24 series smartphones with seven years of software support. While not yet officially confirmed, this would mean the S24 series could get an additional three years of software support on top of the four years of updates Samsung already offered.
Why does this matter?
This basically means the S24 series (expected to launch with Android 14) could get updates all the way till Android 21 (or whatever names the operating system at the time). The move would really put the Samsung Galaxy S-series phones up with the Apple iPhones, known for their reliable five-year support plan.

Currently, Apple rules the smartphone market in terms of software support. If you’re looking for a new phone that you don’t want to replace in two or three years, the new iPhones look like far better options than some of the best Android phones, which only get updated for four to five years at best.
With Samsung offering more updates in the flagship package, more brands may jump in and offer longer software support. This is great from the consumer perspective, as those who don’t need a new phone every couple of years will not be forced into buying a new phone due to lack of updates. It may also help the environment, as more updates and longer-used smartphones could possibly mean lesser e-waste.
Other details
Leaks by X (previously Twitter) tipster Evan Blass also point at other expected specifications including a 6.8-inch QHD+ display on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. The S24 and S24+ are also expected to pack 50MP primary cameras, while the Ultra may sport a 200MP main camera.
