Samsung has announced the world’s first 24GB GDDR7 DRAM memory chip for GPUs. As crazy as the number sounds, expect a crazier performance from the GPUs that use this memory chip. Samsung confirmed that this GDDR7 DRAM will be featured in flagship GPUs next year, and you can expect it in your next console, PC, and perhaps, laptop.
Samsung’s GDDR7 DRAM brings faster performance, but what does this mean for you?
Last year, Samsung announced that it has wrapped up its GDDR7 DRAM development, and has now finally launched the GDDR7 DRAM with a whopping 24GB capacity. Before we tell you how it may impact you as an end user, let’s take a look at the DRAM’s key specifications.
Samsung has used the Pulse-Amplitude Modulation (PAM3) signalling method to achieve data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps. However, the speeds can go up to 42.5Gbps, depending on the usage. This is a 25 per cent improvement over the previous generation of GDDR DRAM chips.
The GDDR7 DRAM chip is made using Samsung Foundry’s 5th generation 10nm process, making its cell density go up by 50 per cent without increasing its package size. Interestingly, despite its faster performance, Samsung has managed to reduce its power consumption by 30 per cent.
All that may sound complicated, but all that means is a better graphical performance. Samsung revealed that this new GDDR7 memory chip will be validated this year and be shipped to GPU makers like AMD or NVIDIA next year.

Once they have this memory chip, we may see it in higher-end GPUs. These GPUs may end up in consoles and PCs. So, all and all, what this new 24GB GDDR7 DRAM chip means is nothing but an improved graphical performance.
However, we will have to wait until next year to see a console or PC with a GPU that has this GDDR7 DRAM chip. Until then, there are other machines in the market that have GDDR6 DRAM GPUs, like the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro, which we can rely on for gaming.
