Runway Gen 3 Alpha is an AI tool that can generate 10-second-long hyper-realistic videos

Generative AI tools today are on the rise and major companies are rapidly revolutionising the content creation industry. A New York-based company – Runway, recently also announced an improvement to its generative video tool which will soon challenge OpenAI’s Sora and Google Veo.

The ‘major’ improvement will focus on speed as well as fidelity, and will be able to generate a 10-second clip based on prompts. Here’s everything you need to know about the AI model.

Runway Gen 3 Alpha: What is it and what can it do?

Runway’s Gen 3 Alpha is primarily designed to generate ‘hyper-realistic’ human faces and expressions. Unlike the company’s previous flagship video model, Gen 2, the improvements will focus on gaining fine-grained control over the final output’s structure, style and motion.

In a blog post, Runway mentioned how Gen 3 will excel at expressing human emotions and highlight a wide range of gestures and actions. It also states how Gen 3 Alpha will be able to identify ‘styles’ and ‘cinematic terminology’, along with enabling imaginative transitions and precise key-framing elements required for the scene.

As of today, the model is restricted to generating only a 10-second clip, but the platform seems to have plans to upgrade with future models and better infrastructure in place.

The Gen 3 Alpha, like other AI video-generating models, was trained on a vast number of examples. This eventually helps it ‘learn’ the pattern and in return, help create new clips. However, Runway doesn’t mention where the training data is sourced from.

When will Runway Gen 3 Alpha be available for use?

As of today, no release date seems to be available for Gen 3 Alpha, and Runway has only showcased demo videos on its official website and social media platforms. It is also hard to tell if the tool will be available for free, or if it will require a paid subscription.

Owing to its scale however, the model is quite likely to be made available for limited use in the case of free users, and may require paid subscription access for extended or large-scale use.

Co-founder Anastasis Germanidis, on X (formerly Twitter), mentioned how the model could be available within ‘days’ to existing subscribers. That said, no price or tiers have been publicly posted and Runway is yet to confirm or deny the possibility.
